“Seek to do good, and you will find that happiness will run after you.”   ~James Freeman Clarke

My oldest son has been asked to be a confirmation sponsor for his cousin. One of the responsibilities of being a sponsor is that you have to write a letter to the candidate encouraging him in his faith journey. As I read the letter that my son wrote, I couldn’t help but be proud of his words of encouragement as well as his honesty as he described his own faith life. While explaining to his cousin the importance of being involved and volunteering at his church, one of the things that he wrote (that I think all of us need reminded of regularly) is that often times he volunteers not because he really “feels” like it but because he knows that it is the “right” thing to do. He also went on to say that after he volunteers, he always leaves with a good feeling inside. How true his words are! I am a firm believer that if you “seek to do good, then you will find that happiness runs after you”. The next time you hesitate to get involved because “you just don’t really feel like it,” remember that happiness awaits those who seek to do good. St. Mary’s would love to have you “seek to do good” here at our wonderful church.

The following are opportunities for you to get involved:

Welcome Center - Volunteers are needed to greet people as they arrive for Mass at the Welcome Center (coffee bar) and answer any questions that they may have about our parish.   Requirements are a ready smile and an eagerness to meet new people!

Refreshment Committee - Throughout the year, St. Mary hosts many events that include food such as the Graduation Brunch, receptions after special Masses, the children’s Halloween party, and the children’s Christmas party. As part of the Refreshment Committee you would be asked to donate an appetizer or dessert for some of these events. This is a wonderful and easy way to get involved, especially if you like to cook.

Family Fellowship Planning Team - Because we feel that connecting with other families of the parish is important for building community, St. Mary of the Hills would like to form a Family Fellowship Ministry. The purpose of this ministry would be to dedicate themselves to helping families of all ages and sizes to connect with other families in the parish.

Picnic Sub-Chairs - As the weather warms up, we naturally start thinking and planning for St. Mary’s parish picnic. This year’s picnic will be held on Sunday, September 16. Volunteers are needed to chair the various subcommittees of the picnic. If you are new to the parish and have been wanting to get involved, this is the perfect opportunity! You will meet many new people and you will have lots of fun while doing it!

In an effort to be more financially responsible as well as to be more “green”, St. Mary’s would like to start using email to send selected letters to our parishioners.
