PRESCHOOL NEWS

Preschool has been full of the signs of spring this week. The children have been bringing in pictures of spring and graphing what they have seen. They were excited to watch the robins building nests in the trees around the school. The four-year-old classes made their own robins and worked on math using gummy worms to share between the robins.

One of the ways we show the children how spring brings changes is to let them watch caterpillars develop into butterflies. They loved examining the tiny caterpillars we have in the classroom. Eventually they will see how they grow into the beautiful butterflies we will release in the school playground.

Our four-year-old classes visited the Sterling Heights Nature Center this week as part of the work they have been doing on animals and their habitats. This gave them an opportunity to see up close some of the animals and birds they have been learning about. They also planted sunflower seeds so they could watch flowers grow.

Looking at nature closely and seeing how flowers grow, learning what rain is and why we need it, made the children recognize all the wonderful things God has given us. When we see how the children look at the wonders of nature, we learn to appreciate our world with fresh eyes.

Registration for children wishing to join the preschool is now available.
Many parents don’t think about preschool for their two-year-old but if your child is turning three by December 1st. this year, now is the time to register for preschool . We still have some places available for the fall program. Please check the church website under Education and then Preschool for information on our program and to download registration forms. If you would like to visit the preschool please contact me 248 853 2461

Basic Information
Philosophy: We strive to develop the whole child physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. We create a warm and inviting environment to learn through active play experiences. In a caring and positive atmosphere, we guide children to a good self-image and encourage children's self-awareness of others.

Special Aspects:

  1. We provide religious instruction and prayer with typical preschool topics.
  2. We keep portfolios on each child.
  3. We offer a "Lunch with Teacher" once a month as well as a special cooking day.
  4. Each classroom has its own bathroom and computer stations.
  5. We offer yearly hearing and vision screening through the Health Department for the  four-year-olds.
  6. We have a gymnasium to utilize gross motor in addition to our outdoor enclosed climbing structure.
  7. Our programs are progressive for academic and social instruction so that students are able to adapt to their next level of learning.

Staff Background: All the staff members are chosen for their education and experience as well as their humanistic qualities. All lead staff are required to have a Bachelor Degree in the field of education and all staff are trained in CPR (yearly), First Aid (every 3 years), blood borne pathogens (one time only) and early childhood (12 clock hours annually).

Admission: In order to be admitted to the program, a child must have an up-to-date physical form on file and be reliably potty trained. The child must also be 3 or 4 by December 1st to be eligible for the appropriate program.

Parent Visitation: We encourage our parents to take time to come and spend a day at school with their child. This offers us the opportunity to show parents the kind of program and atmosphere we provide, as well as providing a sense of relief to know you can check on your child at anytime! In fact, we even hold an annual "Special Person Night" when we close the session during the day and hold a shorter version at night so that dads or other special people who may not be able to attend during the day may have the option to visit with the child.

Discipline: Discipline at St. Mary of the Hills Preschool is used as a means to develop self-control and self-direction. The staff will use positive methods of discipline, re-enforcing acceptable behavior rather than focusing on unacceptable behavior. Every effort is made to use as many positive re-enforcements as possible.

Field Trips: We generally take various field trips though the year. The staff will make all the arrangements and collect the payment. The staff and families will then meet at the scheduled destination on the designated day. The Preschool does not provide transportation to these events. Examples of expected field trips are:
3's - fire station, farm, apple orchard, picnic at the park
4's - apple orchard, dinosaur hill, theatre, zoo
