JYG "Just Say Yes!” That was the focus of our JYG session on December 3rd. During this first week in Advent, we wanted to discuss the definition and importance of this Holy Season, and the opportunity to prepare for a spiritual Christmas. Assigning the roles of Mary, Gabriel, and Narrator, we read the passage of the Annunciation. We discussed how Mary, during the encounter with the Angel Gabriel, said “Yes” to the announcement of being designated the Mother of the Son of God made man. Though Mary could have said no for several reasons, she humbly consented to her mission. Mary’s “YES” was unconditional. This required a strong faith on her part, and trust in the Lord. Living in a state of grace, Mary was able to find the strength and courage to carry out God’s will. We further discussed how Mary was firm in her commitment to do the right thing. Everyday, young people are challenged by their peers to defend the “right things”. This may include the choice of friends, the manner of dress, the type of language one chooses to use, the television shows one watches, and other in-school and out-of-school habits that one promotes. Mary serves as an inspirational example of standing firm in difficult circumstances. We also identified ways we can say “Yes” during this Advent. We talked about the opportunity to say “Yes” to more prayerful time and to helping our parents and family with holiday preparations. Some members also suggested helping others around us at school, or those living on the same street, by doing some thoughtful tasks that can brighten their holiday. Each team member was challenged to both “give something up” and “do something special” to make this the “best Advent Ever”. WE will share these accomplishments at our next meeting. We concluded our session with several games in the Fr. Strain Gym and Shannon Sheldrick, a new team member, was the winner of our mystery guessing jar. Activities for our upcoming Christmas party on Wednesday, December 17th, at 6:30 PM in the gym, will include music, games, and snacks. Grace already has prepared a sign-up list for the team, and will also follow-up with an e-mail to each member. Attendees are requested to bring in some type of snack, beverage, candy, etc. to cover approximately 10-15 people. We will also have a gift exchange, with the cost of the gift to be approximately $5. JYG is an organization for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students looking for an opportunity to have fun and learn, with topics directed toward their interests. We meet twice a month, on Wednesdays, usually the week before and after the St. Mary's of the Hills' GIFT program sessions.
