Sacraments
Confirmation Confirmation is the initiation into the adult journey of faith. This initiation calls the person to become a responsible member of the Christian community by being a disciple of Christ and sharing the "Good News" with others. Confirmation calls us to go out and serve others. The celebration is a serious decision and is not to be made lightly. At the time of registration, the candidate must be committed to making the preparation period the first priority. Immediate preparation will be offered each year for any member of St. Mary's of the Hills who is eligible. The candidate may decide to delay the celebration of this sacrament to a later date. This program spans a two year period, usually when students are enrolled in grades seven and eight. All public school and Catholic school students must enroll in both years of preparation. Further details will be provided, via mail, following your enrollment. To

celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation a candidate must have: SPONSOR REQUIREMENTS The choice of a sponsor should be done with care and based on how well he/she is a witness to the Christian Faith. Being a sponsor is a serious responsibility. There is a relationship between Baptism and Confirmation, thus choosing a godparent as a sponsor is a good way of continuing to live out the commitment begun at Baptism. The basic pre-requisites include: 2. Active participation in the Catholic faith. 3. At least sixteen years of age. The sponsor need not be of the same gender as the Candidate. The sponsor cannot, with very rare exception, be a parent to the candidate. A sponsor is a role model. In essence, they are telling the community that their candidate is an individual they recommend to the Christian Community. CHOOSING YOUR CONFIRMATION NAMEYour name gives you an identity; it tells others who you are. When you were born, your parents chose your name. (If you do not know your parents' reason for choosing your name, ask them about it.) At Baptism you were called by name and christened to become a child of God. Your first name is your "Christian name" and indicates your membership in the Christian community. The name given to you at Baptism is the preferred and recommended name of Confirmation. A saint name may, however, be chosen or a name of a "model" Christian may be taken if you choose. Names other than that of Baptism should be taken for a good and serious reason only. If you choose a saint, please know why and do some research about that saint. Fact Sheet WHAT: This day of reflection is imperative for all candidates. The leader for the day will be Fr. Dan Homan. Included in the day's agenda will be discussion, prayer, music, snack, dinner, private reflection and Mass. In the Eucharist we recognize the actions Jesus lived and continues to live today through each of us. We bring to the celebration of the Eucharist all the experiences of our daily family living. Nourished by the gift of Jesus in the Eucharist, and in the people gathered, we go forth to serve others as Jesus did. Immediate preparation does NOT take place during religious education classes [GIFT], or Catholic school. Each year the parish will provide special immediate preparation sessions for the parent(s) of each candidate. These classes are designed to support, educate and provide materials so the parent(s) of the candidate can properly assist in their child's immediate preparation and celebration of the sacrament. . Further details will be provided, via mail, following your enrollment. Eucharist is the primary sacrament of Reconciliation. It is the policy of the Archdiocese of Detroit that those preparing for Eucharist be catechized for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and that an opportunity for celebrating the sacrament be provided before, but separate from, the catechesis and celebration of the Sacrament of Eucharist. This means that children usually celebrate Reconciliation prior to celebrating First Eucharist. To

It is the outward sign by which we celebrate an always merciful forgiving God, and how we renew our relationship with Him and His people. Reconciliation is a sacrament of continuing growth--growth in closeness to God and deepening oneness with our community. The candidate of this Sacrament needs awareness that he/she has caused disharmony (sin) and needs to ask forgiveness. Children enrolled in the First Eucharist Program are encouraged to celebrate Reconciliation prior to receiving the Eucharist. Older students are welcome to celebrate the Sacrament for the first time if they have not done so. Immediate preparation will NOT take place during regular religious education classes [GIFT].
